Program Note

This piece for live electronics explores how we understand or perceive sounds as they are distorted in front of us. Sounds are broken apart, scattered across a field, and take circuitous trajectories during the piece in an effort to create an always active, and always changing mass. The work was written for the first iteration of the Eastman Mobile Acousmonium in 2017 which has a unique spatialization and response profile. The spatialization of Crumpled Voices — like its treatment of sound — follows the idea of taking a pristine virtual space and literally, crumpling it up in the physical world. We then traverse the creases and valleys as the sounds journey through this new state as we experience the work from the inside.
